Good Morning, America!
I've officially made the switch. No more Today show. I'm a Good Morning America devotee now. Matt and Meredith and Ann are dead to me. Dead.
The last two mornings with my new friend, Diane Sawyer, I've heard stories that I want to share. Yesterday:
A woman died on the floor of an emergency room while the staff of the hospital did nothing to help her. She had been there crying out in pain for 45 minutes, writhing on the floor. Others in the ER tried to help her, but the hospital staff would do nothing. The bystanders even called 911 to try to get the police to come and make the staff help her. Their requests were ignored. The police officer who was actually there spent his time checking her criminal record. She did in fact have a record. And she had no insurance. This was an inner-city hospital and patients like Edith are apparently often not treated well.
It is easy to be angry at this hospital staff and point a finger at those who are very obviously to blame for their prejudices and lack of care. However, it reminds me of a similar story that Dr.Scott used as a sermon illustration a few years back. Someone else had died right outside the doors of an ER and no one helped. He used the story to drive home the point that we Christians often act the same way as those hospital workers. There are people dying all around us and we stand by indifferent, lazy, selfish, bored...whatever, and don't share with them the way of salvation. We keep our mouths closed instead of giving them Life. Ouch.
Today's story:
Ruth Graham died yesterday. I am in awe of her and the relationship she had with her husband, Billy. What a testimony to the world they are in their marriage. While marriages are falling apart all around us, they did it right. Praise God for the way that Billy always speaks about his love for her and her love for Him. Praise God that she was "planning to go, but willing to stay". You know she had planned to be a missionary to Tibet, right? But she knew that God had given her a different assignment...to raise a family and support a man who would take the gospel to the nations.
When Diane spoke of her, having met and interviewed Ruth several times, Diane said there was something "luminous" about Ruth Bell Graham. What an appropriate word...luminous. I wonder if Diane (and all the world) knows what made her "luminous". The Light of the World, Jesus. What an awesome testimony.
